Hesitation in music playback from HDD

I have a HP Pavilion XE763 PC running Win98SE. My problem is when I play downloaded music from my HD, it encounters interupts on the song. This does not happen when playing a music CD. I have a COGNAC MB with CD97 onboard sound. Any suggestions appreciated.
