Hewlett Packard-Compaq

I tripped over the power cord of my Compaq laptop, when I took it back to Circuit City they told me that I messed pulled something inside of the mother board that would not let the laptop charge and that it would cost over $400 to repair because my warranty had just expired. I went out and purchased a new VAIO because I figured it was not worth repairing. I still have the Compaq that will not turn on, but really need things that are on the hard drive, is there any way that I can get the info off of the hard drive of the Compaq that will not turn on, onto the hard drive of the VAIO?
