How can I get XP to recognize a removable FAT-formatted drive?

I have a FAT-xx formatted SmartMedia card with very valuable data on it and my card reader won’t recognize it since I reinstalled XP. It says that it’s not formatted and unformatable. What do I need to do to make the card readable without formatting it?
