How do I delete a file that is in use?

I am having difficulty deleting two word documents. When I try to delete them, I get “Access denied, the files might be in use”

But I am sure that no one has the file open.

The file is sitting on an NT 4.0 server with SP 6a and I have full control of the file and directory
