How do I fix error message <windows root>\system32\hal.dll

I can’t seem to get past this message. I’ve tried hitting F8 and going to safe mode but still get the same message. I have my 3 recovery discs but I know I’ll lose everything on my hard drive if I go this route. I don’t have a Windows XP home edition full version disc but I’m told this comes on my recovery discs. I have a sony vaio lap top. Please let me know if anyone has any suggestions.
