how to build a game server?

i plan on building a game server. i just wanted to know if anyone can suggest a simple way to acheive this. speed would be one factor,plus what os to use. i could use as much help and info i can get on this.i know there is more involved with building a server but these are the only things i can think of at the moment. thanks to any who replys.
