How to calculate computing power needed?

Dear all,

If I have to run some applications in my computer, how do I calculate computing power needed? For example, I have to run an application, access to a database, doing some calculations, etc, then I need a processor with x Ghz speed and y Gb memory. How do I get the x and y number? Thx.
