how to change resloution of screen

Yesterday when i turned on the computer, a little window popped up and said it found new hardware and was installing the driver. ever since then I have been unable to change the screen resolution by using the control panel, display, settings method. the slider for the pixels just won’t move. how can i get it to move again so i can shrink the window so i can see it all again.
