How to delete e-mail without opening

In Outlook 6 and also my previous version after I read an e-mail and delete it the next one automatically opens. Even though I keep my e-mail virus scanning enabled I prefer not to open mail when I don’t recognize the sender, especially on spam. I’ve looked all over the OE ‘Help’ and my WIN98 Que book with no luck. Is there any way to delete mail without opening first?
