How to learn scripting

What is a good source for learning scripting? I am seeing that a lot of potential positions that are available would like someone with scripting experience. I have had my MCSE for 2 years, yet have not been exposed to scripting. I am looking for samples, examples and basics that can be tried in a test enviorment. These should include automated updates, software pushes, logon scripts ect.
