How to really kill Active Desktop?

My system was initially installed with Active Desktop on, so I followed the instructions to revert to the classic desktop for all windows. Even so, a single click launches a program from the desktop or from Windows Explorer. I want to select with a single click & launch with a double click always. Any suggestions?
