HP OfficeJet7313 goes offline

I have a HP OfficeJet7313 all-in-one printer attached to a Dell Optiplex GX620 machine running Windows XP(SP2). However the printer goes offline and stops printing. When I remove the USB cable and reconnect it Windows XP responds with an “unrecognised device” and the printer is not displayed in device manager. Any ideas, any one?
