HP Pavilion ZV5000-screen brightness

When my children connect the laptop HP Pavilion zv5000 to the A/C power supply the screen darkens, when unplugged it goes much brighter.?
Anyone know what causes this and how do i increase the screen brightness when connect to the AC..the buttons marked with the symbol do not seem to work.
