HUGE problem hope I dont have to fdisk

ok I installed IE 5.5 on a machine her at the job it now on bootup wont even go in safe mode without this illegal operation. It goes through all the moves and when you should be arriving at desktop it says EXPLORER.EXE has caused an illegal operation and shuts down. I cannot even get into windows in safe mode is there some way i can fix this? without having to take the machine off the floor and installing cd and floppy just so I can Fdisk was hoping there was a way to get into it without fdisking
