I am having VGA problems with my Gateway FPD2275W widescreen

I have a Gateway FPD2275W that has both DVI and VGA input. I have my desktop tower hooked to DVI and I have my laptop hooked to the VGA. Now my problem is, the DVI looks great, but the VGA has what I can best describe as vertical sync refresh lines that make the screen almost unreadable. I have tried to change the refresh rate of the laptop, but I can not change it from 60hz. Does anyone out there have any suggestions of how to solve this?
