IBM ThinkPad R40 – very slow boot

IBM ThinkPad R40
Client32 v4.83

After entering password, it takes about 2-3 minutes to load the desktop. User noticed this problem only today. Prior to that user claims it was fine.
Restored XP to a point a few weeks ago, checked for Spyware/Adware/viruses, logged in “workstation only”, – everything to no avail.
After initial boot-up, though, workstation operates normally without any delays.
