IE 5 Connection Problems

IE 5’s performance has degraded to a point now that it asks to retry the connection every time it is used and takes forever to connect, is this a result of installing the service pack ( sp 2 for IE 5.01)?. I’m on a DSL line always connected, I have yet to find support for this on microsoft site. Or is the software corrupt beyond repair?
