IE 5.5 opens very slowly/does not open !

I have Windows 98 with IE 5.5. I am having problems opening the browser. It opens very very slowly or does not open at all. Also when I open the task list it shows several sessions with Internet explorer (not responding). Pl. suggest a solution to open the Internet explorer immediately when the icon is clicked. Thanks.
