IE and Win Explorer Freeze in Win XP

by bill in dallas . Updated 23 years, 1 month ago

Using WinXP Pro with SP1 and updates/patches
Using IE6 w/SP2 and latest updates/patches
Client to Win2K server
Norton SystemWorks 2002
After computer has been on for about 2 hours, I can no longer enter in URLs in address window. When I do, IE just pauses forever. I can use the Favorites and go to those links with no problem. I can do a Google search with the Google Toolbar with no problem. Just cannot enter in a URL.

Similar problem when I pull up Win Explorer. It will show my C: drive but not my D drive (another partition) or my other drives (CD, CDRW, ZIP and mapped drive). Also shows My Computer, A drive and My Network Places and My Documents. If I wait about 5 minutes, the D drive and the others appear but I cannot access them.

P4 – 2.2 GHz w/ 256 mb RAM. Intel D850emv2 MB
Task Manager Processes does not show anything taking up CPU time other than System Idle.

If I reboot, everything is fine for a while. I have already reformatted and reinstalled to try and cure this problem.

Would love to avoid junking this PC since it is not that old.

Thanks,

Bill
