IE doesn’t download properly

When attempting to download a link in Internet Explorer 5.5, Instead of getting the dialog box that asks to open or save as, I get another brower window with a quicktime icon that goes to a broken quicktime icon after the download. I uninstalled quicktime and now the icon just changed to some other kind of media icon. I can right click the link and do a “save target as” and it works, but alot of sites, especially microsoft, have buttons that don’t allow a right click with “save target as” option. Can anyone tell me how to fix this?
