WindowsXP SP1 was installed over Win98SE.
When I attempt to log in (IE6) to a secure site (usually one of my distributors) a “Connect To” dialog comes up asking for my Login and Password. Even though these fields are usually blank, it goes on and automatically enters (as if were clicking on OK). It reappears briefly, enters again, then one more time (usually a total of 3 times). Then an “Auuthorization Required” page appears, telling me that it didn’t recognize my credentials.
I believethis problem started before the upgrade. The dialog box always shows either “Protected Area” or “www.xxxxx.com” (xxxx is the domain of the server I am trying to log on to). IF I can manage to select that field (not fast enough most of the time), the automatic entry stops and I am able to enter the information and successfully logon. This leads to the second problem: Apparently, in my efforts to fix this, I have made the “Save Password” checkbox disappear, so that it does not save the information, making me go through all of this the next time I need to visit the site.
Can anyone help me STOP this automatic logon, and restore the ability to save passwords??
I have tried restoring defaults in Internet Options, and I have looked in various registry keys without success. I also am using TweakUI 2.0, and have looked, but didn’t see anythig obvious. One last thing: I followed instructions in MS KB article 229940 (How to Disable Internet Explorer Password Caching (Q229940) when Ifirst started woorking on this problem, because expired Password information was being entered and I thought it migh prevent the automatic entry (It didn’t). When I wanted to restore the checkbox, I changed the key Value Data from 0x00000001 to 0x00000000, and, when this didn’t make the checkbox reappear, I deleted the key altogether, but sitll no checkbox.
Thanks!
