iexplore shows only thumbnail

i am using ie 6 W2kPro sp2 and when trying to download a file it only shows a thumbnail in the upper right corner. i deleted all temp files, cookies, and still the same result, the security settings are set to medium, default, are there other setting that need to be set, modified?
