I’m not able to open my folders on a storage hard drive

This hard drive was in my old computer and did not have an operating system installed. It was strictly storage. I thought maybe it was my old computer’s fault but then I put it in my new computer and it is still doing it. It’s only happening in my “My Pictures”. It shows the right folder names for each folder but when I go to open the subfolders it just displays weird characters (like squares, dashes, etc.) and says the folder has either been moved or there is a syntax error opening the folder. This is only happening in my labeled subfolders in “My Pictures”. All of my pictures that aren’t in subfolders (like the ones I never organized) show up fine. Can someone help me out and maybe give me an idea what’s wrong? I hate to take it to someone and have them charge me an arm and a leg to tell me they can’t do anything. If you need any more info just let me know. Thanks.
