Inspiron 5100

I have this laptop that has no display on the screen. It can only be used when you have an external monitor connected to it. I tried the function keys and even reinstalled. Still same problem. Once when left unplugged for a couple of days. I powered it on and it came up fine and left it like that for a while, then i restarted it and am back to square one. Any ideas
