install precaution

I have nt 40 server and using mirror raid. What precautions should I use when I install utilities as norton or any applicaion on the server. From what I understand whatever I do to server it is copied to mirror drive. My fear is after rebooting server after loading an applicatrion is that I may have a problem ..Thanks
