Installing Additional Harddrive

I am trying to install a second harddrive. After erasing everything that was on it and running fdisk to try to repartition it, it is not getting recognized. I am running Windows95 (no updates), and fdisk reports that the system is unknown when I create the partitions. How do I correct this, so I can get my system to recognize the drive?
