Installing NIC on NT machine

I am attemping to install a 3Com 3C905 or Linksys LNE100TX network adapter on an NT Server 4.0 machine (SP6a). Once the driver is installed, the NIC appears under the network adapters tab in Network panel, although I receive a message in Event Viewer stating a device attached to the network adapter is not working properly. I have attempted to install different NICs during both the NT 4.0 installation process as well as after installation, but NT doesnt appear to find the NIC.
