Installing WinXP Pro over WinME

My PC with WinME has gone “bonkers”–I have tried reinstalling ME, but it only partially works. So,I would like to install WinXP Pro on the PC–not upgrade to it, but do a complete install. Can I merely rename the Windows folder and then do an install? Or is my only alternative to reformat the drive and then do a clean install?
