I put together a server and installed W2K Server. I have it connected to our network with has a Novell 3.12 Server for Authentication. I was not able to connect to the internet last night until I installed the Gateway (and Client) Services for Netware. I did not understand why that made a difference. We are running TCP/IP and I was able to ping the router and our ISP’s DNS servers. Anyway, this morning I am experiencing the same thing. I can ping outside the network with an IP address butnot with a Domain name. So I have a DNS resolution issue. I don’t know what it could be.
Here is some backround. Our network is simple. No other servers other than the Novell. The W2K server has been configured as the only Domain Controller.AD has been set-up so it is also the DNS Server (meaning they have the same IP address, since they are one and the same machine). I also don’t understand why AD didn’t automatically config. the DNS if this is set up as the only DC.
Anyway, after Iconnected to the internet last night I downloaded all the updates for the motherboard (MSI K7T Turbo/RAID). I have two drives mirrored by the O/S and two drives mirrored (for Data) by the MB. The last thing I did last night was have the O/S formatthe drive that is mirrored by the MB.
I couldn’t believe it when I couldn’t connect to the internet with this machine this morning. I’ve since stopped the DHCP and Browser Services and made the Manual, since I don’t think they are needed at this point. I have used the machines IP address as the Primary DNS address followed by the ISP’s DNS address’s. I have also changed them around. The only alert in the Event Viewer (System Log) is about the Windows Time Service. We don’t have a Proxyand all the other machines can access the internet.
Any idea’s anyone. By the way, we are building this Server to replace the Novell Server.
