Internet Connection Sharing and ADSL

Can anyone tell me if the DSL modem needs to be directly plugged into the NIC of the Host PC or can it be in the uplink port of the hub and the Host nics plugged into the hub or if this even should matter? I ma using access manager 1.4. I have had many thoughts and would love a real explanation.
