Internet Explorer

Hi,
I have IE 6 installed on my computer. I am unable to download any sort of software. When i click download from any download site what i get is a square box with X on it. and at the left corner of status bar it shows a sign which means something like opening a download from its current location. I tried resetting all the options in internet explorer security tab. But still the same problem.
Any suggestions???
