Internet Explorer Ad Popup

How do I get rid of the Internet Explorer ad onslaught? I can be in the middle of doing something and am interrupted by IE popup ads. I don’t use IE as my browser but it loads automatically on startup. I have looked in my startup folder and I don’t see it there, but the ads keep coming. How can I stop them from loading?
