Internet Explorer Hangs

I recently installed SP 3 for Windows 2000 Pro. My copy of IE 6 now hangs when you have to close a window or completely exit the program. I have to totally force a shutdown to move on. It freezes the whole computer some of the time. I need to know how to correct the problem.
