internet explorer keeps shutting down

I have installed Windows XP over 98, now I don’t know if this is related, but now I am receiving error messages that read – Windows Explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close. This also happens with Outlook Express. What could be causing this. Any suggestion? Thanks – Klondike
