Invalid Data,Abort Printing

On a Compaq 166mmx Deskpro,Win 95,I have tried to install an Hp printer and I get a message stating invalid data,abort print.Then the setup software for the printer will not recognize the LPT1 port,no matter how many times I remove the port and reinstall it.There have been other printers on this machine but I have uninstalled them.
