Is Activie Directory Connector a must

We are currently in process of testing the upgrade to Windows 2000 and then to Exchange 2000. It appears the only benifit of running the Active Directory Connector is to replicate objects between the two enviroments. Is it a must to run the Active Director Conenctor or can the network wait until I migrate Exchange 5.5 to 2000?
