Is my sound card bad?

I have a Dell Dimension XPS T450 computer with a Yamaha sound “card” built onto the motherboard.
When I play a music CD the instrumental reproduction is good but the vocal repro is terrible (very low volume). I thought a better separate sound card might fix the problem. Do you think this is a good idea? How do I disable the onboard one?
