Is Tivo worth it?

I am just about to pull the trigger on a new Tivo system. With the box only $49, I almost have to. But I just read that Tivo might be struggling to compete with cable services etc, offering DVRs. So, am I wasting my time/money on this? Or is Tivo still a good service with some life left in it?
