I have a Win2K machine running ISA server. I also have a NT4 PC running Exchange 5.5. The ISA server was upgraded from NT4, but I uninstalled the Proxy Server software before installing ISA server.
I upgraded my Exchange Server to Win2K, but ran into a problem. When I installed and implemented the Firewall client which needs to run to get email in and out via the ISA server, it all seemed to be fine until ai rebooted the server. The machine then hung on the “Restoring Network Connections” screen. I ran Microsoft and we thought at the time it was a different problem and went through a long and involved solution finding process which took 5 working days (without email during that time!!!).
In the end I did a clean install back to NT4 and installed the firewall client and the problem went away.
I tried the same process on another PC running Windows 2K Pro and had the same problem. It’s not a case of waiting for it to time out and continue – I tried this and waited three days before giving up. The problem only shows on PCs running Win2K, running XP or Win9X dont have the problem. I’ve installed on a clean disk after doing a format, installed all service packs, but get the same problem. Every time I install the Firewall client and reboot the PC it hangs.
The problem is, I need to upgrade my server to Win2K so I can migrate to Exchange 2000, but am unable to do so.
Does anyone have any bright ideas? Apart from installing Exchange on the ISA server which is my nextoption.
