IT consultant desire Working From Home

I have just completed a B. S. degree in Information Technology with a Business minor. I have 20 plus years doing mainframe development and maintenance.
I would like to focus on an area of IT that would allow me to work from my home office.

Does anyone have any suggestions on where I should focus my area of expertise to ensure I can get work/contracts and work from my home office. I willing to take classes if necessary.

I was thinking if people can work from India etc.
Why can’t an independent American consultant work from home?

Ther must be some areas in IT that are in such demand that we could work from home.
