java script problems

When viewing web pages I’m receiving many java script errors.Unable to use many buttons for instance in internet e-mail. Error always says something to the effect “line xxx character 1 object expected.code 0.” What does this mean and how can I correct it? Is this a browser problem(IE 6) or OS problem (W2K Pro) Help!
