I have a Win98SE machine that recently had a DSL modem installed. Since it was installed with the included software things are not well. The ISP was so kind to inform the user that “it’s an operating system problem”. Of course the dialup access and everything else worked fine until their bloatware was installed.
One issue is IE 6 was giving me an Invalid Protection Fault in Mod Unknown @ 0000:006B1B8C everytime I launched it. I tried removing it and reverting back to IE 5.5SP1, but it still pukes.
Secondly, and more importantly, everytime I restart the computer, as soon as I log in I get the standard message you get after installing and detecting new hardware: “Windows has finished installing your new hardware. Would you like torestart your computer now?”. Thats it. I have no idea what hardware its referring to.
Isn’t there a place in the registry that keeps track of hardware and software that is in the middle of installation? I recall seeing something like that but can’t remember where.
