Laptop boots up and shuts down

I have an IBM Thinkpad A21m. The system was up and then it went into stand by mode. I tried to shut it down by disconnecting the AC power supply and taking the battery off. But now when I tried to boot it up, it makes it as far as the windows startup logo and then it does into stand by and never finishes to boot up. I have observed that the CD is making some cranky noise when I boot up, I took it out, but then the computer wouldn’t boot up at all. I have tried with and without the battery. In the last try, the computer put a message out in text saying that the CD-ROM had an error.
Any ideas?
