Laptop Constantly Slowing Down

I have a laptop thats about a year old, HP Pavilion with an Intel 2g Centrino Duo processor, 2g memory. Running windows xp media center.

I have all the proper antivirus software and my system is constantly slowing down.

What can I do before I just get rid of it and start over.
