Laptop image failure.

I have a compaq 700 series. The laptop boots fine but the screen has vertical lines in diferrent colors. I know it boots up and has no operating system problems because I connected a CRT to it and it looks excellent. I’m not sure if the trouble is in the LCD,inverter or the motherboard. Any thoughts ?
