Laptop screen way too dark

I have a Presario r3000, pentium 4,512 mb ram, 40g. HD. My screen looks all black unless you have a bright inches from it, I put a desktop monitor on it it works untill it hangs at the win XP logo screen for about 3-4 minutes and then the monitor light goes orange and then the monitor shuts off but the computer stays on.
