LCD goes blank randomly – help?

My laptop running XP, has all of the sudden start to give me a blank screen. Can’t tell if the system is hanging as its not running any scan after I reboot it. But it takes several attempts at hard booting to get the screen to come back on. I can’t seem to find it its hardware or software related anywhere. Any idea’s?
