Linking files in Excel

I am working with an Excel file that is linked to about 12 other files. I am attempting to change each of the linked files, but when I click on “Change Source” in the Links window and select the file I want to replace the current linked file, I receive an error message that says “Formula too long.” What can I do? Thanks.
