Linksys DSL/Cable sharing box

is it possible to link up two laptops using different OS (ie; one is using win XP and te other mac x)via two cable modems, how do they connect? is it going to be similar to a direct cable connection between two laptops running on windows? if so, what are te procedures, are there any resources online that i can find.
