Hi,
I’ve installed Win2k Pro for a user’s laptop. Then assigned a computer name and join it to the company domain XYZ on the LAN.
The reason why I join it to the domain is for easy software installation via scripts. The software is pushed down via MSI packages after the computer is joined to domain. Next, I logged on using the user’s domain account and configure each of the MSI-packaged software.
Now the problem is, when the user goes for overseas travel and takes the laptop with him (i.e. out of LAN, he dials in via AT&T Global Network Dialer to access our company public web site to replicate his Notes mail, does he still logon using the domain account or should I create a local user account on the laptop and waste time to install the same software again?
If he logged on using the cached domain account (i.e. out of LAN), he may not receive the latest changes to his account (e.g. password/group membership/share permission changes), but when i create a local user account,I cannot continue to configure those pushed down software packages as the system will search for the domain controller (XYZ) to complete the installation. Hence my temporary solution is to logon using his domain account and configure all MSI packaged software while I’m on the LAN.
And one weird thing is, after I have completed all MSI installation and disconnected the laptop from the LAN and logged in again using the domain account, when opening a document in the File-> Open dialog, MS Wordor any Office application hangs for several minutes before i see the folders dialog.
The problem went away only when I delete the network connections to domain XYZ in Windows Explorer. Could Word be searching for the network drives before giving up after a timeout?
In addition, he needs to access the domain via the LAN in office at times. Any implications and/or suggestions?
